Hmms...

This weekend I went out to dinner for my birthday. Just like all of my other birthdays, I got to choose the restaurant. I chose to eat at Nama, where I could get sushi. Just 5 years ago, I wouldn't have touched sushi. Now, sushi is my favorite food in the world. It is interesting to me how our tastes change as we get older. I am so happy that students in my classes this year have the opportunity to participate in food tastings, and even happier about the students' willingness and enthusiasm with the tastings. Keep trying new things!

Students, what is your favorite restaurant and why? What is a food that you don't like or have never tasted, but you think you might be willing to give it a try? Have you found that your tastes have changed at all over the years?

Roma's Hummus
1 can chick peas
4 cloves garlic (2 if they are outer layers or huge)
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 tsp cumin
1 tsp lemon salt
3 Tblsp sesame seed tahini (If you can't get tahini at a standard grocery store, it can always be found at a gourmet market like Fresh Market or Earth Fare)
1/2 cup chick pea water

Put all ingredients except chick peas into a blender or food processor and blend well. Add chick peas and blend well again. Pour into a dish with paprika sprinkle on top. Note: Lemon salt is really hard to find; it is mostly only sold at middle eastern markets. Try substituting about 1/8 tsp salt and about 1/4 cup lemon juice.
